Special Olympics

The Village of Richton Park and the Richton Park Police Department is proud to be avid supporters of Special Olympics Illinois. It is a not-for-profit organization offering year-round training and competition in 19 sports for nearly 21,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities and more than 18,500 Young Athletes ages 2–7 with and without intellectual disabilities. Eighteen Areas across the state manage Special Olympics in local communities. Through training and competition, Special Olympics enhance their physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence, and social skills. Special Olympics transforms the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

"Cop on Top" Fundraiser for Special Olympics

During the "Cop on Top" event, the Richton Park Police Department stakes out above and around Dunkin’ Donuts Richton Park to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. One day a year hundreds of police officers statewide cover more than 170 Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops to heighten awareness and raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Each year, the Village of Richton Park participates in the Torch Run for Special Olympics, running on behalf of Special Olympics Illinois. Anyone and everyone is invited to run, ride, or skate along with us as we pass the Special Olympics Torch to the Village of Park Forest. Our leg of the run usually begins just after 8:00am from 216th St & Governors Hwy, ending at 7-Eleven on Sauk Trail.

Five-O @ the Dirty "O" Demolition Derby for Special Olympics

Five-O at the Dirty "O" includes Law Enforcement officers region-wide in their custom derby squad cars, racing on the dirt track to raise money for Special Olympics. The race track used is at the "Route 66 Dirt Oval" in Joliet, IL. All money raised goes to the benefit of the over 23,000 adults and children with intellectual disabilities that participate in Special Olympics.

Plane Pull for Special Olympics

The Plane Pull is the ultimate tug-of-war competition as teams compete to pull either a UPS Airbus A300, or a United Airlines 737, weighing more than 180,000 lbs, as quickly as possible.

The Richton Park Police Department, dubbed "Area 51," participated in the Special Olympics Illinois' 11th Annual Plane Pull at Chicago O'Hare International Airport! They also were able to raise $3,200 for an extremely worthy cause, Special Olympics Illinois.

SSSRA is a therapeutic recreation program that is an extension of eight park districts and three recreation and parks departments. It is organized to provide individuals with disabilities or special needs, the opportunity to be involved in year-round recreation.
